CBD & Pets

Did you know that all mammals possess the same naturally occurring endocannabinoid system that humans do? With this in mind, it’s no real surprise to learn that CBD for dogs was one of the most popular recent market trends to hit the US.

CBD for Pets

Pet owners across America have started turning to CBD to help their pets deal with a variety of issues, including noise fears, nervousness, skittishness, pain management, seizures, arthritis and more. Unfortunately, the research around efficacy is still pending, prompting some veterinarians to hold off on recommending CBD for treatment.  Anecdotally, consumers and their pets have been happy with the results provided by CBD so far. Many CBD products use the same CBD oil found in high-quality human products, combined with the flavors and textures that a cat, dog, or horse will love.

Stephanie McGrath, D.V.M., a veterinarian from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, shared a small study she conducted with Consumer Reports. In 2016, she focused on understanding how CBD is metabolized by dogs while trying to identify any potential risks. She conducted two clinical trials, including dogs with epilepsy and dogs with osteoarthritis. McGrath has stated that early results are promising, and more time and research is still needed for the study.

The number one risk that needs to be considered is potential interactions between current medications and CBD. So before giving any products to your pets, make sure to consult your vet.

CBD for Pets Application

CBD products have a range of strengths and concentrations, making it easy to tailor CBD dosing to the size and needs of each animal. CBD intake varies between different species, sizes, and shapes. It is advisable to start with the lowest indicated measurement and closely monitor your pet’s progress. When starting a CBD regimen, it’s generally suggested to maintain a routine for at least two to three weeks to achieve optimal wellness. If you don’t see desired results after a couple of weeks, gradually increase the dosage.
